New to Netflix UK November 2017

It's a bumper pre-festive stack of titles for this month on your favourite viewing platform, Netflix. There's original content abound as we have some Oscar-worthy content coming down the line, alongside some Academy Award winners from this year landing onto the service.

Why not let us take the pain out of incessant scrolling and pick out some of top choices?

Our five highlights:

Weiner (from 1st November)

Rise and fall documentaries are ten-to-the-penny, but Anthony Weiner's tale is something of a curio. Weiner charts the strange compulsion of this public figure of fun, as he is disgraced mutliple times for his deplorable behaviour, with a documentary crew in tow, following his aspirations to be elected Mayor of New York.

6 Days (from 6th November)

One of the most memorable acts of terrorism during 1980's Britain was the storming of the Iranian Embassy in London during a siege held by six gunmen. An event whose notoriety was increased tenfold by the novelty of camera footage featuring the UK's secretive SAS (Special Air Service), whose presence was largely unknown until that point, as they carried out Operation Nimrod in an attempt to rescue hostages. Starring a capable cast including Mark Strong and Jamie Bell; headed by Toa Fraser, a Fujian/Brit, who showcased the film at this year's London Film Festival.

Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond – Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton (from 17th November)

For all the stories of  the late Andy Kaufman, America's much loved harbinger of off-beat comedy, it's safe to say he was a complex character whose perceived madness oft belied his ability to get a response (not necessarily laughter) out of his audiences. He redefined America's perceptions of humour through his unorthodox delivery and performance artistry. Considered equally oddball-ish (during the 90's, at least) was rubber-faced Canadian Jim Carrey, who portrayed Kaufman on the 1999 film Man On The Moon. This documentary is significant, if only, for Carrey adopting Kaufman's weird brand of awkwardness on and off set for the duration of filming and Universal subsequently banning all footage of his antics.... until now.

Elle (from 1st November)

Directed by Paul Verhoeven (Robocop (original), Basic Instinct, Black Book) this French rape-revenge thriller is remarkable for its tone and emboldened performance by its lead, the ever-dazzling, Isabelle Huppert. Matter of fact, and with a touch of incredulity, Elle plays as an even-handed mystery, never betraying the attrocity of its conceit, and is able to deliver moments of light-hearted humour at the expense of its own ridicule.

The Secret Scripture (from 25th November)

Based on Sebastian Barry's best selling novel of the same name and released into cinemas earlier this year, The Secret Scripture has had a polarising time with critics and audiences. Views ranging from 'melodramatic' to 'traditional weepie' may not instill the best of confidence, but the talents of Rooney Mara, Theo James and Jack Reynor may tip the balance for you.
