New to Netflix UK October 2017

Another month has rolled round and it's time, yet again, to glance over all the titles you can cram into your eyeballs over the coming 30 days and add to your every-growing watchlists. Then spend all the time you set aside to watch a film scrolling through every single title.

Let us help.

Our five highlights:

Robin Hood: Men In Tights (from 4th October)

Mel Brooks' last successful lampooning (albeit fairly late even in 1993) of the Kevin Costner smash-hit Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) (incidentally also added this month on 1st October). One to file under many other parody films of the era including all Leslie Nielsen's Naked Gun series - smarter than mean-spirited Your Highness (2011) and a testament to Brooks' classic pastiches of the 70's & 80's, possessing a comedic skill and bawdiness lacking in the banal humour of latter-day comedies.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (from 13th October)

Receiving releases at film festivals across the world, Noah Baumbach (The Squid & The Whale, Frances, Ha!) debuts this Netflix-funded films straight onto the platform. Dealing with the indie sensibilities of modern America, Bambach's latest stars Adam Sandler in a serious role - not seen since Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love (2002), where he capably illustrated a tolerable side to his screen prescence. Throw in recent stable-mate Ben Stiller, Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman and you've got a veritable banquet of stars in a Jewish-American drama-dey (yes, we used that word) dealing with the machinations of family life.

One to watch, if only for the mirage of Sandler's capable acting skills.

Verónica (from 1st October)

As Halloween approaches, it's only right we warm you up with some off-beat spookiness.  From one half of the directing duo behind the frightful [REC] franchise, comes a psyschological supernatural thriller based on a 1992 'true story' (yeah, right) as a girl attempts to reconnect with her recently dead father using a Ouija board. Always a good idea. Always ends well.

Madame Bovary (from 19th October)

Another re-telling of Gustav Flaubert's classic which slipped under the radar after doing the rounds on the festival circuit.

Headed up by Mia Wasikowska in the titular lead, alongside a bevvy of familiar faces; Rhys Ifans, Paul Giamatti, Marshall Logan-Green, Ezra Miller, takes on the status quo of society to achieve her dreams despite the airs and graces expected of her. An inspirational tale and claustrophobically dark throughout, Wasikowska is an unconventional lead who strays away from the intent of the source, but is nonetheless mesmerising as a curio of mis-casting. Worth a watch for the scenery alone, even if you're a die-hard Flaubert purist.

Stranger Things: Season 2 (from 27th October)

Do you have a hankering to re-live the 80's? Do you have a fondness of flatcaps, bicycles, riding in the woods and being chased by middle-aged men? Do you want to show your kids a taste of what it was like when you were a child?

Then Stranger Things is for you.

Wholesale ripping off every childhood film of the 80's, this nostaligic phenomenon is centered around a group of children without the trappings of modern technology and winding up in odd dimensions, cultish conspiracies and endless fandom.

I'll be dipping my toe back into the water at some point; if you're of an age where this era was prevalent, it's difficult not to. The allure of walkie-talkies and overactive imaginations is bait enough, but the expectaction weighs heavy on this season to deliver more than the whimper the first ended on.

I'm sure no one will be writing think-pieces of every character's actions for the month to follow

And that's your lot!

Why not tweet us or email your picks of the month? Did we miss something you think everyone should see?
